Which Fitzgerald novel is listed as preceding The Great Gatsby?
Answer
The Beautiful and Damned
Answer
The Beautiful and Damned
The Beautiful and Damned is the Fitzgerald novel listed immediately before The Great Gatsby in his sequence of novels.
F. Scott Fitzgerald published The Beautiful and Damned in book form in 1922, three years before The Great Gatsby appeared in 1925. It was his second novel, following his debut, This Side of Paradise, which was published in 1920.
The novel follows Anthony Patch and Gloria Gilbert, a wealthy young couple whose lives deteriorate amid alcoholism, dissipation, and the pursuit of inherited money. Like The Great Gatsby, it examines privilege, excess, romance, and the instability beneath glamorous social worlds.
A frequent mix-up is choosing This Side of Paradise. That was Fitzgerald’s first novel and precedes The Beautiful and Damned, not immediately The Great Gatsby. Tender Is the Night came later, in 1934, while The Last Tycoon was published posthumously in 1941.
