Google acquired Fitbit in 2021 for approximately $2.1 billion in an all-cash transaction.
Fitbit was founded in 2007 and became a major wearable-technology company by selling devices that tracked steps, exercise, sleep and other health-related measurements. Its products helped make activity tracking a mainstream consumer category before smartwatches became widely established.
Google announced the purchase in November 2019 and completed it in January 2021 after regulatory review in several jurisdictions. Google said Fitbit's health and fitness expertise would complement its hardware and software ambitions. The company also made commitments concerning user health data, including that Fitbit health and wellness data would not be used for Google advertising.
The acquisition is distinct from Google's purchase of Nest in 2014, which focused on connected-home devices. Fitbit continued operating as a recognizable brand, while Google later used Fitbit technology and services alongside its Pixel and Wear OS ecosystem.
