Which Finnish city hosted the 1952 Summer Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Helsinki hosted the 1952 Summer Olympics.

The Games opened on 19 July 1952 and closed on 3 August. Helsinki had originally been selected to host the 1940 Olympics, but those Games were cancelled because of the Second World War. The Finnish capital eventually staged the Olympics twelve years later, becoming the northernmost host city for a Summer Olympics at the time.

The 1952 Games were notable for the return of Germany and Japan to Olympic competition after the war. The Soviet Union also made its Olympic debut. The main Olympic Stadium, designed by Toivo Jäntti and Yrjö Lindegren, remains one of Helsinki’s best-known sporting landmarks. Helsinki should not be confused with Tampere or Turku, major Finnish cities that have not hosted a Summer Olympics.
