Which financial company became the parent of JPMorgan and Chase after their 2000 merger?

The story behind the answer

JPMorgan Chase became the parent company of JPMorgan and Chase after the 2000 merger of J.P. Morgan and Chase Manhattan.

The merger combined two historic American banking institutions. J.P. Morgan traced its roots through a major investment-banking tradition, while Chase Manhattan was a large commercial bank with deep roots in New York. The combined company initially used the name J.P. Morgan Chase, later styled JPMorgan Chase.

JPMorgan Chase expanded again in 2004 by merging with Bank One, whose chief executive Jamie Dimon became the combined company's leader. During the 2008 financial crisis, it acquired Bear Stearns and Washington Mutual's banking operations with federal support and regulatory approval.

The company is often confused with J.P. Morgan, the investment-banking brand, or Chase, the consumer-banking brand. Both operate within JPMorgan Chase & Co., which serves consumers, businesses, institutions, and governments and ranks among the world's largest banks by market value.
