Disney acquired 20th Century Fox as part of its 2019 purchase of major 21st Century Fox assets for $71.3 billion.
The transaction transferred to Disney the 20th Century Fox film and television studio, the Fox television production business, international assets, and significant entertainment holdings. It did not include every Fox asset: the Fox broadcast network and several other properties were spun into the separately traded company Fox Corporation. Disney also sold Fox’s regional sports networks as part of the regulatory process.
Disney initially agreed to a $52.4 billion stock transaction in 2017, but Comcast made a competing offer. Disney increased the total consideration to $71.3 billion, combining cash and stock. The acquisition closed in March 2019 after regulatory approvals and required divestitures. The studio was later rebranded as 20th Century Studios, dropping “Fox” from the name while retaining the historic film-studio identity.
