Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012 for approximately $4.05 billion, gaining the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises.
George Lucas founded Lucasfilm in 1971 and retained ownership of the company until selling it to Disney. The acquisition was announced on October 30, 2012, and included Lucasfilm's live-action and animation businesses, along with Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound.
The deal also included plans for a new Star Wars trilogy. Star Wars: The Force Awakens, released in 2015, became the first film produced by Disney in the main Star Wars series. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy continued to lead the company after the acquisition.
A common mix-up is confusing Lucasfilm with 21st Century Fox, whose entertainment assets Disney acquired in a separate transaction completed in 2019. Lucasfilm was an individual company acquisition, not part of that larger deal.
