Which fighter won the UFC 92 tournament by defeating Rashad Evans in the final?

The story behind the answer

Forrest Griffin won the UFC 92 tournament by defeating Rashad Evans in the final.

UFC 92 was held in Las Vegas on December 27, 2008. Griffin and Evans met in the light heavyweight tournament final after Griffin had defeated Rampage Jackson earlier in the event and Evans had defeated Chuck Liddell.

Evans won the final by third-round technical knockout, stopping Griffin with punches after a knockdown. The result made Evans the interim UFC light heavyweight champion and kept him undefeated at that point in his career.

The event’s tournament structure can cause confusion because UFC 92 also featured a separate interim heavyweight title fight between Frank Mir and Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira. Mir won that bout, but it was not part of the light heavyweight tournament. Griffin and Evans later coached against each other on The Ultimate Fighter 10.
