Which fighter won the interim welterweight title at UFC 143?
Answer
Carlos Condit
Answer
Carlos Condit
Carlos Condit won the interim welterweight title at UFC 143.
Condit defeated Nick Diaz by unanimous decision in the February 4, 2012, main event at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The interim championship was created because undisputed champion Georges St-Pierre was unavailable after suffering a knee injury.
The judges awarded Condit the five-round contest by scores of 49–46, 49–46, and 48–47. Condit’s movement, kicking attacks, and long-range striking helped him win a closely debated fight against Diaz’s pressure-heavy boxing style.
Condit later faced St-Pierre in a title-unification bout at UFC 154. St-Pierre won that contest by unanimous decision, so Condit’s UFC 143 championship reign was an interim reign rather than an undisputed one.
