Hobbiton is the fictional village that is home to Bilbo and Frodo Baggins in J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories.
The settlement lies in the Shire, a peaceful region inhabited mainly by hobbits. Bilbo’s house, Bag End, stands at the end of a tunnel on a hill overlooking Hobbiton. Frodo inherits Bag End and begins his journey from there in The Lord of the Rings.
Hobbiton is more than a setting for domestic scenes. It represents the settled, agricultural life that Tolkien contrasts with war, industrial destruction, and the pursuit of power. The village also helps establish the scale and customs of hobbit society before the wider events of the narrative disrupt them.
Hobbiton is sometimes confused with the entire Shire. The Shire is the larger country; Hobbiton is one of its villages. Bywater is another nearby settlement, while Bree lies outside the Shire.
