J.K. Rowling described Quidditch in the companion book Quidditch Through the Ages.
The book was published in 2001 as a charity companion to the Harry Potter series. It is presented as a history of the wizarding sport by the fictional author Kennilworthy Whisp, rather than as a conventional nonfiction work by Rowling.
Quidditch is played on broomsticks by two teams of seven players. Its equipment includes four balls: one Quaffle, two Bludgers, and one Golden Snitch. The Seeker who catches the Snitch usually earns 150 points and ends the match, although that does not automatically guarantee victory.
The sport is often confused with Muggle Quidditch, a real-world adaptation created for players without flying broomsticks. Rowling’s fictional game also inspired later adaptations and terminology in fan and sporting communities.
