Which fictional school employs Minerva McGonagall in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series?

The story behind the answer

Minerva McGonagall works at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

McGonagall is introduced as a professor of Transfiguration and serves as head of Gryffindor House for much of the series. She is a strict but fair teacher, a member of the Order of the Phoenix, and one of Hogwarts’ most important defenders during the conflict with Lord Voldemort.

After Albus Dumbledore’s death, McGonagall becomes acting headmistress during the Battle of Hogwarts. Later material identifies her as headmistress. Maggie Smith portrayed McGonagall in the original Harry Potter film series, giving the character a widely recognized screen presence.

Hogwarts is one of several wizarding schools mentioned in Rowling’s world. Beauxbatons and Durmstrang appear in connection with the Triwizard Tournament, while Ilvermorny is a North American school described in later Wizarding World material. McGonagall, however, is specifically associated with Hogwarts in Scotland.
