Which fictional Renaissance assassin is the protagonist of Assassin's Creed II?

The story behind the answer

Ezio Auditore is the protagonist of Assassin's Creed II.

The game introduces Ezio as a young Florentine nobleman whose life changes after his family is betrayed and executed. He becomes involved with the Assassin Brotherhood and spends the story pursuing those responsible while uncovering a much older conflict involving the Templars and powerful Renaissance figures.

Assassin's Creed II covers several decades of Ezio's life, beginning in Florence in 1476 and continuing through locations including Venice and Forlì. The character's arc continues in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed: Revelations, creating the series' first major multi-game protagonist trilogy.

Players sometimes confuse Ezio with Altaïr, the central character of the first game, or with Connor, the protagonist of Assassin's Creed III. Ezio is specifically associated with Renaissance Italy and the second main game.
