Which fictional region is explored in the original Pokémon Red and Blue games?

The story behind the answer

The original Pokémon Red and Blue games are set in the fictional region of Kanto.

Kanto is the first major region in the Pokémon video-game series. Players travel through towns, routes, forests, caves, and waterways while earning eight Gym Badges and eventually challenging the Elite Four. The region contains the first generation of Pokémon and forms the setting for the original Pokédex quest.

Kanto is named after the real Japanese Kantō region, although the Pokémon version rearranges geography and adds fictional locations. Important places include Pallet Town, Viridian City, Saffron City, Cinnabar Island, and the Indigo Plateau.

Kanto is sometimes confused with Johto because Pokémon Gold and Silver allow players to revisit Kanto after completing much of the Johto story. In the original Red and Blue games, however, Kanto is the central and only explorable main region.
