Which fictional race does J.R.R. Tolkien’s character Legolas belong to?

The story behind the answer

Legolas belongs to the Elves in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fiction.

Legolas is an Elf of the Woodland Realm and the son of its king, Thranduil. He appears as a member of the Fellowship of the Ring in The Lord of the Rings. His keen eyesight, hearing, agility, and skill with a bow make him an important member of the company during its journey.

Legolas forms a close friendship with Gimli, a Dwarf. Their relationship is significant because it crosses the long-standing hostility between many Elves and Dwarves. Their friendly competition over defeated enemies adds humor while also showing the alliance formed during the War of the Ring.

Legolas is not the same character as the Elven lord Elrond or the warrior Glorfindel. He is specifically associated with the Woodland Elves of Mirkwood, although Tolkien’s books often use broader terms such as Sindar and Silvan Elves when describing the peoples of that region.
