The fictional people living in Hobbiton in J.R.R. Tolkien's stories are Hobbits.
Hobbits are a small, human-like people created by Tolkien for his Middle-earth legendarium. Hobbiton is a settlement in the Shire, the rural homeland of many Hobbits, including Bilbo Baggins and Frodo Baggins. Its most famous landmark is Bag End, the Baggins family home.
Tolkien presents Hobbits as fond of gardens, good food, quiet routines and several meals each day. Their ordinary lifestyle provides a deliberate contrast with the wars, kings and supernatural powers surrounding them. That contrast is central to the emotional shape of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
The word Hobbit is not a synonym for every small fantasy creature. Dwarves are a separate people, Elves are immortal beings in Tolkien’s mythology, and Ents are tree shepherds. Hobbiton is also distinct from the wider Shire: Hobbiton is one village within that larger region.
