Tolkien described the Ents as the tallest fictional people in Middle-earth.
Ents are ancient, tree-like beings who guard forests. Their name comes from an Old English word meaning “giant,” and their most prominent leader is Treebeard, also called Fangorn.
In The Lord of the Rings, Merry and Pippin meet Treebeard after escaping from Orcs in Fangorn Forest. Their conversation helps awaken the Ents to the destruction caused by Saruman, whose industrial expansion threatens the forest.
Ents are not simply giant trees: they walk, speak, think, and have their own language and customs. Tolkien also created Entwives, who preferred cultivated gardens and farmland. The Ents’ march on Isengard is one of the major turning points in the story, but their exact height varies because they are individual living beings rather than a uniform race.
