Mount Doom is the destination of the One Ring in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Mount Doom, or Orodruin, is a volcano in Mordor. Sauron forged the One Ring in its fires, and the Ring can be destroyed only in the same place. Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee cross Mordor and climb the mountain after the Fellowship’s mission has broken apart.
At the Cracks of Doom, Frodo claims the Ring instead of voluntarily casting it away. Gollum then bites off Frodo’s finger and falls into the fire while holding the Ring. Its destruction breaks Sauron’s power and causes the collapse of his military strength and fortress.
Mount Doom is distinct from Caradhras, the mountain pass near Moria, and Mount Gundabad, a northern stronghold associated with Orcs. The name “Orodruin” is a Sindarin term meaning “Mountain of Blazing Fire.”
