Which fictional mountain is the destination of Frodo’s quest in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Mount Doom is the volcanic mountain that Frodo must reach in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Its Cracks of Doom are the only place where the One Ring can be destroyed. The mountain stands in Mordor, the land controlled by Sauron, so reaching it requires the travelers to cross hostile territory and evade Sauron’s armies and servants.

Frodo and Sam reach the mountain after crossing Mordor with Gollum’s help. At the final moment, Frodo claims the Ring rather than willingly casting it away. Gollum then bites off Frodo’s finger, falls into the fire with the Ring, and unintentionally completes the destruction.

Mount Doom is also called Orodruin, a Sindarin name meaning Mountain of Blazing Fire. It should not be confused with Caradhras, the mountain pass that obstructs the Fellowship earlier in the journey.
