Which fictional language did J.R.R. Tolkien create for the High Elves?

The story behind the answer

The fictional language J.R.R. Tolkien created for the High Elves is Quenya.

Quenya is one of Tolkien’s best-developed Elvish languages. He based aspects of its sound and structure on Finnish, while also drawing on his broader knowledge of historical linguistics. In Tolkien’s invented history, Quenya developed from the older language Valarin-influenced Eldarin traditions and was associated especially with the Ñoldor and other High Elves.

Tolkien used Quenya in names, songs, ceremonial expressions, and poetry throughout his writings. The name of the sword Narsil and phrases such as “Namárië” reflect his linguistic design, although the published texts provide only part of the language’s full grammar and vocabulary.

Quenya is often confused with Sindarin. Sindarin was another major Elvish language and became the everyday Elvish speech of much of Middle-earth, while Quenya had a more formal and historical role.
