J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit follows Bilbo Baggins on an unexpected adventure.
Bilbo begins the story as a respectable hobbit who prefers regular meals, quiet routines, and the comforts of Bag End. The wizard Gandalf and thirteen dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, persuade him to join their journey to the Lonely Mountain. Their goal is to reclaim the dwarves’ treasure from the dragon Smaug.
Bilbo is distinct from Frodo Baggins, the central hobbit of The Lord of the Rings. The two are relatives, and Bilbo’s discovery of the One Ring becomes a crucial link between the novels. During his adventure, Bilbo also obtains the sword Sting and meets Gollum beneath the Misty Mountains, events that shape the later history of the Ring.
