Monica Reyes becomes Doggett’s partner after Scully leaves the X-files office.
Reyes joins the X-files storyline during the eighth season, after John Doggett takes over the investigation of paranormal cases during Mulder’s absence. When Scully later leaves the office to teach at the FBI Academy, Reyes becomes Doggett’s continuing partner on the unit.
Unlike Scully, Reyes is strongly receptive to paranormal explanations. She studied folklore and mythology at Brown University and earned a master’s degree in religious studies, background that helps explain her interest in the unusual cases handled by the X-files. She is also fluent in Spanish and previously investigated cases for the FBI in several field offices.
Reyes and Doggett have an earlier connection: she investigated the kidnapping of Doggett’s son, Luke, before they were assigned as partners. Monica Reyes is played by Annabeth Gish and becomes a main character in the ninth season. The other choices are FBI figures connected to the broader conspiracy, but none replaces Scully as Doggett’s partner in this context.
