Which fault ruptured during the 2015 earthquake that struck Nepal?
Answer
Main Himalayan Thrust
Answer
Main Himalayan Thrust
The Main Himalayan Thrust ruptured during the 2015 earthquake that struck Nepal.
The magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred on 25 April 2015, with its epicentre northwest of Kathmandu. It resulted from India moving northward beneath Eurasia along the enormous plate-boundary fault beneath the Himalayas.
The rupture occurred on the Main Himalayan Thrust, a gently dipping megathrust that accommodates the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates. The earthquake caused widespread destruction in Nepal and triggered avalanches, including one on Mount Everest.
A major aftershock of magnitude 7.3 struck on 12 May 2015. The disaster killed nearly 9,000 people and damaged historic buildings, villages, roads, and other infrastructure across Nepal and neighbouring regions.
