Sanders was born in 1890 and began selling fried chicken from a roadside restaurant in North Corbin, Kentucky, during the Great Depression. He developed a pressure-frying method and a seasoning recipe that became central to the business. After the first franchise opened in 1952, the chain expanded rapidly across the United States and overseas.
Sanders sold KFC in 1964 but remained a paid brand ambassador until his death in 1980. Although later advertisements have used actors, animation, and redesigned illustrations, they portray the same Colonel character. The “colonel” title was an honorary Kentucky appointment, not a military rank.
