Which car brand's logo features a black prancing horse on a yellow shield?

The story behind the answer

The car brand whose logo features a black prancing horse on a yellow shield is Ferrari.

Ferrari’s emblem is known as the Prancing Horse, or Cavallino Rampante in Italian. Enzo Ferrari adopted the horse after meeting the family of Francesco Baracca, an Italian flying ace who had displayed a horse emblem on his aircraft. Baracca’s mother reportedly suggested that Ferrari use it as a good-luck symbol.

Ferrari first used the horse on its racing cars in 1932. The yellow background was chosen in honor of Modena, Enzo Ferrari’s hometown. The shield version normally includes the Italian tricolor above the horse and the initials SF for Scuderia Ferrari. A rectangular version later replaced the initials with the Ferrari name.

A common mix-up is Ferrari’s association with red. Rosso corsa, or racing red, became strongly linked with Ferrari’s cars, but red is not the logo’s defining background color. The emblem itself is identified by the black horse and Modena yellow.
