Which fast-food chain owns the coffee-and-doughnut brand Tim Hortons?

The story behind the answer

Restaurant Brands International owns the coffee-and-doughnut brand Tim Hortons.

Restaurant Brands International, commonly called RBI, acquired Tim Hortons in 2014 through a merger with Burger King Worldwide. The resulting company became one of the world's major quick-service restaurant groups and also owns Burger King and Popeyes.

Tim Hortons began in Canada and grew into a major coffee, baked-goods, and quick-service restaurant chain. Its name comes from Tim Horton, the Canadian ice hockey player who was one of the chain's founders.

People sometimes identify 3G Capital as Tim Hortons' current parent. 3G Capital helped finance the 2014 transaction, but the operating parent created by the merger is Restaurant Brands International. Corporate ownership and brand operation are separate from the chain's Canadian origins.
