Givenchy designed Audrey Hepburn’s black dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
The 1961 film’s costumes were created by Hubert de Givenchy, who had already developed a close creative relationship with Hepburn. Their collaboration began with Sabrina in 1954 and continued through several of her most famous screen appearances.
The long black evening dress worn by Holly Golightly in the film’s opening sequence became a defining image of cinematic fashion. Hepburn appears outside Tiffany & Co. in New York, wearing black gloves, a multi-strand necklace, and an elegant gown whose clean silhouette reflects Givenchy’s refined style.
The outfit is often called a “little black dress,” although its length and formal construction make it more elaborate than many modern examples of that category. The film helped connect Givenchy’s name with Hepburn’s public image and influenced later red-carpet styling. The dress shown in the movie should not be confused with later auction replicas or reinterpretations inspired by the scene.
