Which fashion designer collaborated with Dalí to create a shoe hat?

The story behind the answer

The fashion designer who collaborated with Dalí to create a shoe hat was Elsa Schiaparelli.

The Shoe Hat was created for Schiaparelli’s winter 1937–38 collection and took the form of a high-heeled pump turned into headwear. Its heel pointed upward while the toe tilted over the wearer’s forehead, turning a familiar item of clothing into an elegant but absurd Surrealist object. The design is among the best-known results of the partnership between Schiaparelli and Dalí.

The idea was connected to a 1933 photograph by Gala Dalí showing Salvador wearing a woman’s shoe on his head and another over his shoulder. Dalí later sketched the concept, and Schiaparelli adapted it into a wearable couture accessory. Gala Dalí wore the finished hat, as did Schiaparelli and the American heiress Daisy Fellowes.

This collaboration is often remembered alongside the lobster dress, tears dress, and skeleton dress. Schiaparelli was not merely borrowing Dalí’s name: her fashion practice deliberately brought Surrealist imagery into couture. The shoe hat is therefore associated with Schiaparelli as the designer and with Dalí as the artistic collaborator.
