Salvador Dalí was granted the title Marquess of Dalí of Púbol in 1982. King Juan Carlos I created the Spanish noble title in recognition of Dalí’s importance to Spanish culture.
The title referred both to Dalí’s surname and to Púbol, the village in Catalonia where he owned a medieval castle. Dalí had purchased the Castle of Púbol for his wife and muse, Gala, in 1968; after her death in June 1982, he moved there.
A common mix-up is 1983: that was the year the title was changed from hereditary to life-only at Dalí’s request. Another tempting date is 1989, the year Dalí died, but he held the title from 1982 until his death. The honor therefore belongs firmly to 1982, not to the later administrative change or his final year.
