Which famous opera house opened in Manaus during the Amazon rubber boom in 1896?
Answer
Teatro Amazonas
Answer
Teatro Amazonas
Teatro Amazonas opened in Manaus in 1896 during the Amazon rubber boom.
The opera house was built when Manaus had become wealthy from rubber exports. Its architecture reflects European influence, with materials and decorative elements imported from abroad. The building’s dome is especially notable for its colourful ceramic tiles arranged in the pattern of the Brazilian flag.
The theatre was designed to bring European-style opera and concert performances to the rapidly growing city. Construction began in 1884, and the building was inaugurated on 31 December 1896.
Rubber prices later collapsed after plantation rubber from Southeast Asia captured much of the market. Manaus declined economically, and the theatre was largely inactive for decades before restoration and renewed performances made it a major cultural landmark.
