Georgia O'Keeffe repeatedly painted Cerro Pedernal, a flat-topped mountain in northern New Mexico.
Cerro Pedernal rises near Abiquiú and became one of O'Keeffe's most recognizable New Mexico subjects. Its distinctive mesa-like profile allowed her to simplify the landscape into strong horizontal and vertical forms, often presenting the mountain from different distances and viewpoints.
O'Keeffe famously referred to it as her private mountain, writing that she could see it from her house and that it belonged to her. The phrase describes an artistic relationship rather than legal ownership.
After her death, O'Keeffe's ashes were scattered from the summit. Cerro Pedernal is sometimes confused with Ghost Ranch, another nearby landscape associated with her, but they are separate places.
