Which family dynasty arose from the Maccabean revolt?

The story behind the answer

The family dynasty that arose from the Maccabean revolt was the Hasmonean dynasty.

The revolt began in 167 BCE when the priest Mattathias and his sons resisted the Seleucid king Antiochus IV Epiphanes and restrictions on Jewish religious practice. Judah Maccabee became the revolt’s best-known military leader, but his brother Simon Thassi ultimately established the dynasty’s independent rule in Judea.

The Hasmoneans first gained autonomy within the weakening Seleucid Empire and later ruled an independent Jewish kingdom. Their territory expanded into surrounding regions, including Samaria, Idumea, Galilee, and parts of Perea. Hasmonean rulers combined religious and political authority, with several serving as high priest and king.

The dynasty is often confused with the Herodian dynasty because Herod later ruled Judea and married into the Hasmonean family. Herod was not a Hasmonean ruler; he displaced the last reigning Hasmonean monarch in 37 BCE. The Davidic dynasty belongs to an earlier biblical royal tradition, while the Ptolemies ruled Egypt.
