Which fabric feature gives denim its characteristic diagonal ribbed surface?

The story behind the answer

A twill weave gives denim its characteristic diagonal ribbed surface.

Denim is a sturdy cotton fabric made with a twill construction. In the traditional arrangement, indigo-dyed warp yarns pass over lighter weft yarns in a repeating pattern. This produces the diagonal lines visible on denim and helps create its familiar blue outer face.

The weave is different from the dye. Indigo supplies the color, while the twill structure supplies the diagonal texture and contributes to denim’s durability. The two features are often treated as one because classic blue jeans combine them, but they are technically separate.

Different denim weights, yarns, and finishing processes can change how prominent the ribbing looks. Stretch denim may also include elastane or other fibers, yet its woven surface can still retain a twill structure.
