Persol created the 649 sunglasses in 1957 for Turin tram drivers.
The 649 was designed in Turin, Italy, to protect tram drivers’ eyes from dust and airflow. Its large lenses and distinctive bridge were practical features for people working in moving vehicles, but the model later became a celebrated example of Italian eyewear design.
Persol’s name comes from the Italian phrase “per il sole,” meaning “for the sun.” The company was established by Giuseppe Ratti, who had already developed protective eyewear for aviators and motorists. Persol also became known for its Meflecto flexible temple system, which allows the temples to bend more comfortably.
The 649 is often confused with the 714, another famous Persol model. The 714 is associated with actor Steve McQueen, while the 649 is the earlier Turin tram-driver design.
