Blue is the required eye color in the traditional breed standard for Ragdoll cats.
Ragdolls are large, semi-long-haired color-point cats developed in California during the 1960s by breeder Ann Baker. Their blue eyes result from the same general type of temperature-sensitive pigmentation associated with color-point patterns: pigment is reduced in warmer parts of the body, while the cooler ears, face, legs, and tail become darker.
Ragdoll kittens are born very pale and develop their points over the first weeks and months of life. Their coats occur in several patterns, including colorpoint, mitted, and bicolor, and in multiple point colors. The blue eyes remain a defining breed feature across these patterns.
The name “Ragdoll” came from the breed’s reputation for becoming relaxed when handled, although individual cats vary and should not be treated as floppy toys. Ragdolls are not the only blue-eyed cat breed, so eye color alone cannot identify one with certainty.
