Which explorer is credited with naming the Amazon River after encountering Indigenous female warriors in 1541?
Answer
Francisco de Orellana
Answer
Francisco de Orellana
Francisco de Orellana is credited with naming the Amazon River after encountering Indigenous female warriors in 1541.
Orellana was a Spanish explorer who joined Gonzalo Pizarro’s expedition searching for cinnamon and rumored riches east of the Andes. After becoming separated from Pizarro, Orellana and his crew continued downstream and eventually reached the Atlantic Ocean.
The expedition’s Dominican friar, Gaspar de Carvajal, described a battle with women fighters. Orellana reportedly connected them with the Amazons of classical Greek mythology, giving the river its European name. The exact identity and social role of the warriors remain debated by historians.
The river had many Indigenous names before European exploration, including names associated with its major regional sections. “Amazon” therefore reflects a European historical label, not the river’s original Indigenous naming traditions.
