Which exchange opened in Dubai in 2000 as the United Arab Emirates’ first local stock market?

The story behind the answer

The Dubai Financial Market opened in Dubai in 2000 as the United Arab Emirates’ first local stock market.

The Dubai Financial Market, commonly abbreviated DFM, was established by the Government of Dubai and began operations on 26 March 2000. It created a regulated local venue for trading shares and other securities in Dubai.

DFM later became a publicly listed company in 2007, making it one of the region’s notable exchange operators with publicly traded shares. Its market includes equities, debt instruments, real-estate investment trusts, and exchange-traded funds, subject to the exchange’s listing and regulatory framework.

Dubai has another important venue, Nasdaq Dubai, which focuses heavily on international listings and products. The two are distinct exchanges, although both operate in Dubai. Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange is also separate: it serves the emirate of Abu Dhabi rather than Dubai.
