Which Ethiopian mountain range is known for its jagged peaks and endemic wildlife?
Answer
Simien Mountains
Answer
Simien Mountains
The Ethiopian mountain range known for its jagged peaks and endemic wildlife is the Simien Mountains.
Located in northern Ethiopia’s Amhara Region, the Simiens are a high volcanic massif carved by millions of years of erosion. Deep valleys, sheer escarpments and serrated pinnacles give the range its dramatic appearance. Ras Dashen, at about 4,550 metres, is Ethiopia’s highest mountain.
Much of the range lies within Simien Mountains National Park, established in 1969 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. Its wildlife includes the walia ibex, a wild goat found only in the Simien region, as well as gelada baboons and the endangered Ethiopian wolf.
A common mix-up is confusing the mountain range with the national park: the park protects a major section of the Simiens, but the geographical range is broader. The highlands are also notable for occasional snowfall, an unusual sight in tropical Africa.
