Which Ethiopian castle complex is a UNESCO site in Gondar?

The story behind the answer

The Ethiopian castle complex that is a UNESCO site in Gondar is Fasil Ghebbi.

Founded in the 17th century by Emperor Fasilides, Fasil Ghebbi became the fortified royal enclosure of Gondar and a residence for Ethiopian emperors. Its buildings reflect a distinctive blend of Ethiopian, Portuguese, Indian, and Arab architectural influences.

The complex includes Fasilides’ castle, Iyasu I’s palace, Empress Mentewab’s castle, a royal library, a chancellery, a banqueting hall, stables, and several churches. The name ghebbi means a compound or enclosure in Amharic.

UNESCO added Fasil Ghebbi, Gondar Region, to the World Heritage List in 1979. It is often confused with Lalibela, another famous Ethiopian UNESCO site, but Lalibela is known primarily for its rock-hewn churches rather than a royal fortress complex.
