“Pawnee Zoo” won the 2010 GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Individual Episode. The Parks and Recreation episode centers on Leslie Knope organizing a publicity wedding for two male penguins at the Pawnee Zoo, only to discover that the stunt has become a political issue involving same-sex marriage.
The episode is the seventh overall and the premiere of season two. It originally aired on September 17, 2009, and was written by Norm Hiscock and directed by Paul Feig. Its storyline was inspired partly by real-life male penguin couples, including Harry and Pepper at San Francisco Zoo. Leslie’s refusal to annul the penguins’ wedding gives the comedy a clear connection to equal-marriage debates of the period.
The award was presented in March 2010 in the GLAAD category for an individual episode from a series without a regular LGBT character. “Pawnee Zoo” is sometimes confused with later fan-favorite episodes such as “Flu Season” or “Galentine’s Day,” but neither won this award. The episode also helped signal the show’s shift toward sharper topical comedy in its second season.
