Which entrepreneur founded the electronics company Amstrad before becoming a dragon on Dragons' Den?

The story behind the answer

Alan Sugar founded the electronics company Amstrad before becoming a dragon on Dragons' Den.

Sugar founded Amstrad in 1968; the name was formed from his initials and those of his business partner, Stanley H. A. M. D. The company initially traded in consumer electronics and later became known for products including hi-fi equipment, satellite television hardware and personal computers.

Amstrad made Sugar one of Britain's best-known technology entrepreneurs. He later became a peer and a television personality, including as the business adviser and host of The Apprentice in the UK. He joined Dragons' Den as an investor in the programme's first series.

The company name is sometimes mistaken for a model or product line, but Amstrad was the business Sugar founded. Peter Jones, another prominent dragon, is a separate entrepreneur associated with telecommunications, technology and retail investments.
