James Dyson founded Dyson, the company known for bagless vacuum cleaners.
Dyson became interested in vacuum design after observing that a conventional machine lost suction as its bag filled with dust. He developed a cyclonic system that separated dust from air without relying on a disposable bag.
Dyson built thousands of prototypes before launching the G-Force vacuum cleaner in 1983. British manufacturers initially showed little interest, so the machine was first sold in Japan, where it won a design award.
The company later expanded into hand dryers, fans, heaters, hair-care products, and other technologies. Dyson’s first successful vacuum was not the same as every later “Dyson” model; the company developed multiple generations of cyclonic machines.
