Which English prince was known as the Black Prince during the Hundred Years' War?
Answer
Edward of Woodstock
Answer
Edward of Woodstock
Edward of Woodstock was the English prince known as the Black Prince during the Hundred Years' War. He was the eldest son of King Edward III and became one of England's most celebrated military commanders.
Edward won important victories at Crécy in 1346 and Poitiers in 1356. At Poitiers, the English captured King John II of France, a remarkable success for the prince and his army. Edward was created Prince of Wales in 1343, making him the first English heir to hold that title.
The nickname “Black Prince” is not securely documented during Edward's lifetime. It appears in sources from after his death and may refer to his black armor or his reputation as a stern warrior. Edward never became king because he died in 1376, one year before his father.
