Which English knight defeated the French at the 1356 Battle of Poitiers while serving as captain of the English army?

The story behind the answer

Edward the Black Prince defeated the French at the 1356 Battle of Poitiers while serving as captain of the English army. He was Edward of Woodstock, the eldest son of King Edward III.

At Poitiers, the English force was heavily outnumbered but used defensive positions and longbowmen effectively. The French king, John II, was captured during the battle and taken to England. The victory became one of the most celebrated English successes of the Hundred Years’ War.

Edward was called the Black Prince, although the nickname does not appear clearly in contemporary records. He was a prominent military commander but never became king, dying in 1376 before his father. His son succeeded Edward III as Richard II. The prince’s heraldic shield displayed the three lions of England with a label used to distinguish it from his father’s arms.
