Which English country house gave its name to the sport of badminton?

The story behind the answer

Badminton House in Gloucestershire gave its name to the sport of badminton.

The sport's modern form developed from earlier racket-and-shuttle games, including battledore and shuttlecock and the Indian game poona. British army officers encountered poona in India and brought the game to England. In the 1870s, it was played at Badminton House, the country residence of the Duke of Beaufort, and the location became closely associated with the game.

The name gradually shifted from the place to the sport itself. This is why badminton is unusual among major sports: its name comes from an English estate rather than from a person, a city, or a descriptive action.

Badminton House remains a historic country house in South Gloucestershire. The sport's rules were later standardized by clubs and governing bodies, so the modern court and scoring system are more formal than the recreational game played there in the nineteenth century.
