Which English Baroque architect designed Blenheim Palace?

Sir John Vanbrugh designed Blenheim Palace in England.

Blenheim Palace was commissioned as a grand national monument and residence for John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, after his victory at the 1704 Battle of Blenheim. Construction began in 1705 at Woodstock in Oxfordshire, with Vanbrugh working alongside the practical and technically experienced architect Nicholas Hawksmoor.

Vanbrugh was not formally trained as an architect; he was also a successful playwright and theatre designer. At Blenheim he developed a powerful English Baroque style, using massive stone walls, monumental gateways, towers and dramatic roofline sculpture to suggest a fortress or citadel rather than a comfortable country house.

The project became embroiled in disputes over money, political support and the Duchess of Marlborough’s preference for a more practical home. Vanbrugh left before completion, but the palace, finished in 1722, remains his best-known architectural work. Christopher Wren was considered for the commission, but he did not design Blenheim.
