Saudi Aramco became the first energy company to exceed a $2 trillion market capitalization after its 2019 stock-market debut.
Saudi Aramco briefly surpassed a $2 trillion market value during trading on December 12, 2019, its second day on the Saudi Stock Exchange. The company had priced its initial public offering at 32 Saudi riyals per share, giving it a valuation near $1.7 trillion at listing.
Saudi Aramco is formally the Saudi Arabian Oil Company and is controlled by the government of Saudi Arabia. It operates across oil exploration, production, refining, chemicals, and related energy activities. Its enormous hydrocarbon reserves and production scale made the offering one of the most closely watched listings in financial history.
The company’s valuation briefly exceeded the target often associated with the IPO before later moving below it. This record is separate from the technology-company milestones involving Apple and Microsoft. It also illustrates why rankings by market capitalization can change quickly with commodity prices, interest rates, investor expectations, and political risk.
