The Unversed are the enemy type that debuts in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep.

They are a distinctive enemy faction created for the 2010 prequel. The game describes them as “fledgling emotions” that are not well-versed in their own existences, and they feed on negativity. Their presence gives Birth by Sleep its own combat identity alongside the series’ earlier Heartless and Nobodies.

The Unversed are closely tied to Vanitas and Master Xehanort’s plan. They are manifestations of Vanitas’s emotions, and defeating them causes their negativity to return to him. Vanitas uses them to fight Ventus and strengthen him before the attempt to forge the χ-blade.

Players sometimes confuse them with Dream Eaters because both are unusual creature types. Dream Eaters instead debut in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, while Nobodies originate in Kingdom Hearts II and Heartless appear from the series’ first game.
