The first Kingdom Hearts game resulted from a collaboration between Square and which company?

The story behind the answer

The first Kingdom Hearts game resulted from a collaboration between Square and The Walt Disney Company.

Released for the PlayStation 2 in 2002, Kingdom Hearts blended Square’s role-playing expertise and Final Fantasy connections with Disney characters and animated-film worlds. The project was directed by Tetsuya Nomura, who created original characters including Sora, Riku, Kairi, and the Heartless.

The collaboration produced an unusual crossover: Sora travels through worlds inspired by films such as Aladdin, Hercules, and The Little Mermaid, while Donald Duck and Goofy accompany him. Final Fantasy characters, including Cloud, Aerith, and Squall, also appear, but Square—not Sony, Capcom, or Nintendo—was the development partner.

Square later became Square Enix through a 2003 merger with Enix. That corporate change affected later Kingdom Hearts releases, but the original game was developed and published by Square. Disney remains central to the franchise’s identity and ownership.
