J.R.R. Tolkien based Quenya chiefly on Finnish among the languages that influenced its design.
Quenya is one of Tolkien’s most developed Elvish languages. He modeled aspects of its sound and structure on Finnish, while also drawing inspiration from Latin and other languages. In his mythology, Quenya is associated with the high Elves and has an elevated, literary status.
Tolkien was a philologist, so his invented languages were built with historical development, grammar, vocabulary, and sound changes rather than as random collections of fantasy words. Quenya therefore has a linguistic history within Middle-earth as well as a real-world history in Tolkien’s notebooks and manuscripts.
Sindarin is another major Elvish language, but Tolkien associated its sound more strongly with Welsh. Khuzdul is the language of the Dwarves, and the Black Speech is associated with Sauron.
