Which electric vehicle set the Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record in 2019?

The story behind the answer

The Volkswagen I.D. R set the Nürburgring Nordschleife electric-vehicle lap record in 2019.

Romain Dumas drove the purpose-built prototype around the 20.832-kilometre Nordschleife in 6 minutes 5.336 seconds. The run surpassed the previous electric record held by the NIO EP9 and demonstrated the performance potential of a lightweight electric racing car.

Volkswagen developed the I.D. R with two electric motors, all-wheel drive and a large aerodynamic package. Its low mass and high downforce were especially valuable on the Nürburgring, a circuit famous for elevation changes, blind corners and its length.

The I.D. R was not a production car, so its record should not be compared directly with records for road-legal electric cars. It also set the overall Pikes Peak record in 2018, making it one of the most successful electric prototypes in motorsport history.
